Coffee and Mental Health: An Ally Against Depression

Joelma Oliveira

We’re in the month of Yellow September, when suicide prevention campaigns take place. And in this context, Consciência Café couldn’t miss the opportunity to talk about coffee and mental health.

But what do you mean? What does coffee have to do with this?

Here at the café, we have some stories of people who found in coffee a way to reconnect with life, whether by making or drinking the beverage.

And not only do these stories inspire us, but we also know about the benefits of coffee for preventing depression.

That’s why today we’re going to explore this topic a bit more, and maybe you’ll also find in coffee a great antidote! Enjoy the read!

Coffee and Depression: What Do Studies Say

What has already been proven is that the polyphenols present in coffee, in considerable amounts, help reduce inflammation in the cells of the central nervous system.

This means that coffee improves your mood, reduces your anxiety, and also contributes to your concentration and memory.

All of this is great for fighting depression.

However, what’s worth mentioning are the recent studies published by the Harvard School of Public Health in 2021, conducted around the world. These studies pointed out that consuming 4 to 5 cups of coffee per day is associated with a lower mortality rate.

The most striking result was among those who consumed coffee in moderation, who showed a 50% reduction in the risk of men and women committing suicide.

The probable reason for this lies in the antidepressant effects of coffee.

This study concluded that coffee can be part of a healthier lifestyle for those who consume it in moderation.

And What Is Coffee’s Contribution to Reconnecting with Life?

First of all, it’s important to understand the issue of suicide, which is the extreme measure someone can take. We’ve separated some data in the next topic.

Understanding Suicide and Depression

Suicide, the act of taking one’s own life, is responsible for more than 800,000 deaths per year worldwide, that is, 1 suicide every 40 seconds.

In Brazil alone, there are 12,000 suicides per year, and nearly 97% of cases are associated with mental disorders, the main one being depression.

So there’s no denying that taking care of mental health nowadays is extremely necessary.

Coffee as an Antidepressant Ally

That’s where coffee comes in as an ally. A simple beverage, but so beloved in different countries.

And best of all, it’s not just the drink — along with it comes tradition and cultural habits that reinforce moments of well-being and interaction.

It’s the coffee that sometimes is the reason to get out of bed in the morning, that helps ease a stressful work day, and that is part of good conversations with friends and family.

Our beloved brew also expresses our personality and personal taste, and can even be a source of inspiration, creativity, and learning.

It’s all these interactions and sensations that open a space for coffee to help people reconnect with life, through the exchange of experiences and emotional support.

That’s why this perspective on coffee is interesting — as a beverage that benefits the body but also the emotions. It’s good for the individual, but also for the collective, when we look at its social role.
