1. Freshly roasted coffee tastes much better!

First of all, to prepare a good coffee you’ll obviously need quality coffee. So opt for beans from a specialty coffee.

In some coffee shops you can find delicious specialty coffees at affordable prices — here at Consciencia Cafe we have some that you’ll love!

When it comes time to brew, prefer freshly roasted beans, and if you’re going to grind them, do it just before preparing the drink.

This way, you’ll extract the natural flavors and aromas of the coffee and be able to explore more sensations from the beverage.

2. Store properly

Speaking of exploring sensations, to preserve all the bean’s flavor it’s necessary to store the beans in an airtight container.

Preferably in a cool, dry place, without humidity or direct light on the container. Buy your coffee in small quantities so you always have fresh coffee on hand.

3. Choose the grind according to the brewing method

That’s right — each brewing method has a more appropriate type of grind. For example, if you’re making an espresso, a finer grind is ideal.

Coarser grinds are better for the French press or filtration methods.

4. Find your ideal water ratio

This depends on your personal taste; however, the recommendation is to use 10ml to 15ml of water for every 1g of ground coffee.

If you want to improve your brew, invest in a scale to get the ideal amount right.

5. Use quality water

A good coffee requires clean, filtered water to avoid unexpected odors and flavors. The ideal temperature is between 90°C and 96°C.

6. Explore various brewing methods

It’s truly incredible how the same coffee bean can take on different taste and texture depending on the brewing method you choose.

That’s why it’s great to try different methods — you’ll explore new sensations and discover which one pleases you the most.

Among the most common methods, you can choose:

  • French press;
  • Chemex;
  • Hario V60;
  • Aeropress;
  • Moka pot;
  • And many others.

7. Preheat your utensils before brewing

If you’re wondering why this is necessary, it’s simple…

Preheating your utensils before preparing the drink helps maintain the proper temperature during the extraction process.

So preheat utensils like the kettle, French press, and filter holder. And here’s an extra tip:

Pour hot water over the paper filter before adding the grounds, then discard the water. This way, you avoid your drink tasting like paper.

8. Pay attention to extraction time!

Each method has an ideal extraction time — that is, the time the water stays in contact with the grounds to extract the flavor.

With a pour-over, if it takes more than 5 minutes for the water to pass through, your coffee may become bitter.

For an espresso, for example, the ideal is 25 to 35 seconds for every 50 ml of water.

9. Keep your equipment clean

To ensure a fresh coffee flavor, it’s important that your coffee utensils and equipment are always clean.

Residues that build up in the utensils directly affect the taste of the drink.

10. Learn to appreciate your beverage

Finally, when your coffee is ready in your cup, don’t rush through it or gulp it all at once.

Enjoy the moment, savor each sip, so you can perceive all the aromas and flavors it offers.

And as you develop the habit, you’ll discover your preferences!

Practical V60 recipe to make at home

  1. Place the paper filter in the V60 and pour a little water to remove the paper taste. Don’t forget to discard that water afterwards!
  2. Prefer a finer grind for the V60. We recommend 1g of coffee for every 15ml of water.
  3. Add double the amount of water relative to the dry coffee used. That is, for every 15g of dry coffee, add 30ml of water.
  4. After 30 seconds, continue adding water, pouring slowly in circular motions until you reach the required amount of water.
  5. After all the grounds have filtered through, your drink is ready. This process should take about 3 minutes for a standard V60.
  6. Once the process is complete, just drink and enjoy your beverage!
